About Beechworth   (stolen from Beechworth Surgery)

Beechworth is situated in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, 38km (½ hour) from Albury-Wodonga to the north-east, and 30km from Wangaratta to the south-west. Melbourne is 3 hours drive to the south. It has a population of 4,100 and is a historic goldrush town dating back to 1852.

 

Many attractions exist in the surrounding areas, including:

  • The famous Beechworth Bakery

  • Wineries – Beechworth is a wine region, predominantly consisting of independent, small to boutique winemakers and growers, and produces some of Australia’s finest wines, particularly Chardonnay, Shiraz and Gamay. Several Beechworth vignerons are nationally and internationally recognised for their high quality and unique wines.

  • Close by is the renowned wine area of Rutherglen.

  • Skiing – The ski fields of Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buffalo are all within 1½ hours drive from Beechworth.
